The Demons fell to 2-2 at the hands of a St. Kilda side led by teenagers Carl Ditterich, 18, and Ian Cooper, 17. After going into half time 16 points down, they got to within five points early in the last quarter but the Saints steadied to win.

Ray Groom was the Demons best, but he had few friends. Barry Bourke and Bryan Kenneally both failed to have an impact at full-forward, with Saint Verdun Howell holding both well. Barrie Vagg kicked four goals, but his impact on overall performance was lacking.

Best were Groom, Anderson and Roet. Roet (burst blood vessel in lung) was replaced by Jacobs and Williams (thigh) by Watson, both in the last quarter. Barry Bourke ended the game battling cramp.

Brian Dixon missed with a shoulder injury, perhaps a blessing in disguise as he was standing for the seat of St Kilda for the Liberal Party in the following month’s State Election. His absence removed any chance of turning off voters with a blinding performance.
