After an encouraging Round 1 victory over Richmond, the Demons had been shocked by St Kilda and looked set for a similar beating at half time of the match at the newly christened Shell Stadium.
Melbourne were without talls White, Shanahan, Lyon and Grgic - allowing Geelong to do as they pleased before Todd Viney sparked a revival in the third term and helped his side drag the margin back to 13 points.
Ten minutes into the last scores were level, and a goal to Russell Robertson helped extend the margin to seven points at the 23 minute mark but the Cats goalled, and then kicked two behinds in a row to take the lead. They then kicked the sealer from a mark 30m out from goal, to continue Melbourne's miserable run at the ground where they hadn't won since 1988.
Viney, Matthew Febey and Adem Yze were best.
