Collingwood win by 10 points
With the match being played on a scorching 33 degree day, the hottest April temperature in Melbourne since 1938, it was expected that one - or both - of the teams would wilt before the final siren at Victoria Park. Instead they played the match of the day and the two sides fought it out until the last few seconds.
Quite literally fighting were Danny Hughes and Brian Taylor who fought a running battle throughout the day. Also on their worst behaviour were the crowd who incessantly booed Peter Moore on the many occasions when he touched the ball. A scuffle in the third quarter involved 10 players but didn't even in any reports.
The lead changed five times in the last quarter but it was the Demons who kicked themselves out of it by wasting chances.
Best for Melbourne were Moore, Icke and Withers. Barassi described it as a "stirring effort" from his troops and paid tribute to first gamers Payne and Rugolo for their performances.
Barassi was thrilled by the efforts of Hughes in fighting with Taylor, saying, “we’re aggressive, and we’re not going to be picked on this year”.
