Melbourne's first match at Kardinia Park was a second straight hard fought success as they tried to get their season back on track after Round 1 disappointment.

Geelong game them some trouble with their speed at times during the second quarter and early in the last term, but they couldn't sustain the effort for the full four quarters. Weaknesses in defence were covered by their brilliant attack, and it was enough to ensure a second straight victory.

Not all the action at Kardinia Park was related to the game. Twice during the match rabbits ran onto the field, and a dog which couldn't be removed from the surface spent most of the first quarter hanging around the Demon forward line before changing ends with them at quarter time. It took two policeman to remove the dog at half time and the rest of the match went on unimpeded by animal invasion.

After being quiet for the first three quarters, Jack Mueller was Melbourne's star in the final term when he was swung to centre half-back.

Best were La Fontaine Wartman who played two great quarters despite suffering a bad knock early, and Baggott.
