For the second week in a row the Demons gave their fans a good first half before throwing the match away and being overrun - this time by the reigning wooden spooners. Three goals in three minutes during the first term got them off to a flying start, and with Stan Alves on a wing and George Lakes in the centre dominating they looked more than a match for North.
It was only when the experienced players who had such a huge burden on them in a young side were finally taken out of the play by the Roos that North started to get on top.
Having seen his side crash to 0-2 John Beckwith went straight from the coaches bench to a meeting with his selection committee. It was North's first win at the MCG since Round 18, 1952.
Best were Hardeman, Parke and Alves. Davis (bruised back) was replaced by Sullivan in the last quarter. Lakes (bruised heel) was replaced by Clarke in the last quarter. Bourke had cramp and Weekes a bruised shoulder.
