The Redlegs had been creditable in defeat during their Round 1 loss to St Kilda, but against the team they had edged out for a spot in the finals in 1915 they were thrashed.
In bad weather it was only poor kicking by South which stopped the game from being a blowout at quarter time, and despite breaking even in the second quarter when rain fell throughout Melbourne would kick just one more goal for the match. Their backs saved them from more damage in the third term but at the expense of attacking potency.
Despite their comfortable win South were far from the side which had lifted the premiership the year before. They were fortunate to come up against a Melbourne side who overused handball and when they did kick the ball they usually found an opposition player.
Allan, McKenzie and Love were amongst the best, Allan running himself into the ground playing ruck for almost the entire day.
Haines barely contributed after the first quarter because of the shoulder injury he'd first suffered against St Kilda.
