The Cats, three games clear at the top of the table, were always going to be too strong for the 16th placed Demons but the magnitude of their victory was unexpected.

In front of a national TV audience on a Friday Melbourne, fresh from a fighting 16pt loss to Essendon, capitulated in amazing fashion and found themselves 53 points down after a humilating scoreless first quarter.

The first score, which came from a fumbled attempt at a mark by a Geelong player on the goal line, brought ironic cheers from the fans.

An epic spray from Dean Bailey at quarter time failed to stem the bleeding as the Cats blew their lead out to 70 points lead at half-time. Betting agencies stopped taking money on the game and reset their line at a hundred points - and with good reason to as the Cats slammed on another seven goals to one in the third quarter to take a lead of more than a hundred points to the final change.

A rare highlight of the evening was Paul Johnson kicking a goal of the year contender from the boundary line for the second goal of the night.

A Chris Johnson goal on the siren kept the margin under 20 goals but all in all it was a sobering night against the best team in the land for a young Demons side lacking in confidence and talent. Johnson's kick for goal would be his last for the Demons, leaving the club at the end of the year to join Carlton.

Best were Whelan, Valenti and Green. Jeff White was a late replacement for Mark Jamar.
