Having blown their chances of sneaking into the finals two weeks earlier the Demons put in a poor performance at Collingwood, drawing within four goals only when the double chance bound Magpies went into self-preservation mode in the final term.
The game was all but over at quarter time when the Pies were 25 points ahead, and they extended the margin to 44 at the long break. Long overdue changes to the side's structure after half time helped Melbourne keep the score respectable. With the Pies looking ahead to their final against Geelong, the visitors put on a burst of five last quarter goals to make the final score look more respectable.
Carroll replaced Johnston in the last quarter. Lehman was the unused 20th man.
