In another game played without a crowd due to COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria, the match was rescheduled from a twilight game to a night match. Earlier wet weather cleared in time for the bounce, and Melbourne shot out to a lead of nearly five goals early in the second quarter. Three goals just before half time got the 17th placed Hawks back in the game, and by three quarter time they were just a point behind.
Leading by five points late in the game, Melbourne had the chance to seal victory when ex-Demon Sam Frost turned the ball over kicking off the ground near the boundary line, but an Angus Brayshaw set shot missed, and from the resulting kick-in the Hawks went to the other end and kicked the goal to tie scores. Neither team was able to break the deadlock in the last 40 seconds, leading to Melbourne's first draw since Round 1, 2011, and their first ever against Hawthorn.
Best were Petracca, Lever and Petty. Tom Sparrow was unused medical substitute. for the second week in a row.
