With two teams entering the last few weeks of the season with nothing to play for except pride, the Swans and Melbourne clashed in front of a tiny crowd at Waverley and it was South who came out on top.

The win was South's third in a row, the first time they had achieved that feat since 1970, and they continued to be a bogy side for the Demons - inflicting their second straight win on former champion Bob Skilton in the opposition camp.

Melbourne snuck in front by a goal at the last change, with Robert Flower and Carl Ditterich dominant but they were swept away by an avalanche of South goals in the last term.

It was a great day all-round for the Swans, their seconds won their first game for the year and joined the Demons at 1-17 on the Reserves ladder, while their Under 19s had a one point win.

Best were Ditterich, Flower and Wells. Carroll (ankle) was replaced by Molloy in the third quarter and Wood (thigh) was replaced by Williamson in the last term.
