It had been a disappointing season with just three wins, but Melbourne had been in reasonable form in the last few weeks and ended on a high. They kept the Students goalless in the first term and opened a three goal lead.
University made in-roads into the lead in the second quarter, before Melbourne kicked away again in the third. With a 26 point lead to defend at three quarter time the Reds could afford to lose the last quarter and still end the year on a high.
Best were Tomkins, Monk and Hendrie.
