Melbourne finished a disappointing season with a fighting defeat against the Magpies. They had been helped by a slice of luck with Collingwood missing two of their best players, and a streak of good fortune with their goalkicking which saw the team score six straight goals into the third quarter.

The superior Collingwood side took over again before Melbourne levelled the scores in the third quarter with a brief period of slashing football that saw three goals in a short space of time. The margin was seven points at three quarter time, and it was then that Melbourne's luck deserted them - their early accurate kicking was replaced with easy shots that were missed and Collingwood ran away with a comfortable victory.

Best were Cumberland, Wardill and Wood.
