Having just beaten the league leading Carlton for the second time that year, Melbourne were given their first chance to seal a finals berth by beating one of their nearest contenders but failed to take it.

Melbourne were without Warne-Smith, Johnson, Wittman, Cutler and Conole but when they booted six first quarter goals it didn't looked as if their weakened side would pose any problems. But with Essendon dominant in the air they restricted Melbourne to just two points in the second quarter.

Kicking with the wind again Melbourne retook the lead in the third quarter but they hadn't set up enough of a buffer and couldn't defend the margin.

Tymms, Margitich and Vanthoff were best. Taylor received a knock in a contest.

The loss ruined any chance Melbourne had of earning the double chance and left them in third but only a game clear of Richmond, Geelong and Essendon - all who had vastly superior percentages. A clash with Richmond the next week would help shape the four.
