Melbourne welcomed back Liam Jurrah for a clash against the crisis club of the week in front of a big crowd at the MCG. Despite conceding the first goal the Demons had their second most productive quarter of the season to take a handy lead into quarter time.

The match was almost over at the half before a belated Bombers fightback in the early minutes of the third term, Melbourne struck back and the margin blew out to as much as 51 points in the last quarter when the Demons kicked the first three goals, but with the foot off the pedal Essendon struck back with six of the last seven goals to make the margin more respectable.

The Bombers were reckless in conceding seven goals from 50m penalties, gifting Mark Jamar a goal with the last when Michael Hurley casually jogged over his mark.

Best were Green, Jamar and Sylvia.
