Garry Lyon returned after two months on the sideline with a broken thumb, helping his side to a much-needed victory against a Fitzroy side that started the afternoon inside the top six. The Demons were coming off the bye, and a 107 point loss to Footscray a week earlier, and John Northey gave his players a week off formal training. A fresh Melbourne overturned a three quarter time deficit to win. Northey said "If that helped today, who knows? We won the game".
After a rare spell on the bench in the third quarter after struggling until then, Jim Stynes was in top form in the final term. The game turned in the last term when Lyon was awarded a free kick, then a 50 metre penalty when Paul Roos failed to return the ball to him correctly. Lyon goalled, but later admitted Roos had simply handballed poorly when passing the ball. It kicked off a comeback and Melbourne won easily in the end.

Lion Richard Osborne became the first player to fall victim to a league crackdown on wrestling. The actual offence of wrestling was not introduced until the next year (snagging Allen Jakovich as its first offender) but Osborne was booked for misconduct by a boundary umpire after grappling with Haydn Robins before the bounce.
