The Demons were still three wins out of the top five with seven games left and needed every point they could get to try and sneak into the finals. So when the sirens went with the ball in the hands of first game Roo Alistair Clarkson even North coach John Kennedy couldn't watch, relying on the sound of the crowd roar to let him know what had happened.
With the game tightly poised at every break the Demons were every chance of snatching a victory against the fourth placed North. The Roos had opened a break in the second quarter when ruckman John Mossop kicked three goals in a row, but his contribution didn't last much longer and the third quarter belonged to Melbourne, taking a four point lead into the last term.
With five minutes to go scores were level, but when Danny Hughes snuck forward to goal in the 26th minute it looked like the Demons were home, but North went forward for two points and with the last kick before the siren Clarkson outmarked Robin White and held his nerve to convert and win the match for North. White would never play for the Demons again, but the next time the two sides met Melbourne registered a massive 118 point Elimination Final victory.
