The Demons fifth loss in a row was their third by under a goal. Like the heartbreaking defeats against North Melbourne and Collingwood Melbourne should have won but ended up going home empty handed again.
Ross Dillon and Greg Parke were dominant in front of goal again, and midway through the second quarter the lead was over five goals. Nothing prepared the Demons for the blast that Essendon would put in the second half of the second term, and by the long break they had kicked six in a row - including three to Les Stillman - and were a goal in front.
Melbourne went into the last quarter eight points in front, but two more goals to Stillman amongst five for the term helped the Bombers over the line.
Best were Rowlands, Bourke and Parke. Denis Clark (ankle) was replaced by Kelvin Clarke in the last quarter. Jones was replaced by Schwartz in the last quarter.
