With only percentage keeping them on top of the ladder Melbourne lined up against a side out of finals contention and did just enough to beat them, taking the four points which kept them above Collingwood on the ladder.
North's form had been encouraging in previous weeks, and they'd been anything but the easybeats they had been in other seasons. Even though they weren't in contention for a finals place the defeat was their largest for the season.
Ron Kimberley was one of Melbourne's best, holding dangerous North forward Murray to a handful of kicks. La Fontaine and Ball were also amongst the best. Gordon Jones was replaced late with injury.
