In a season where they found themselves at the foot of the ladder after losing countless close matches, the Mayblooms served up a truly terrible performance in crashing to defeat on the MCG.

Both sides were desperately out of form - Melbourne with one win in eight and Hawthorn with one in seven - and the home side were playing for pride only now that they were well out of the race for the top four.

In wet, muddy conditions with most of the ground covered in water the two sides had an even first quarter, before the Redlegs shot away with a 5.6 to 0.1 second with the aid of the breeze. Despite the awful conditions Taylor converted a place kick from 40 yards out on an acute angle.

With systematic football impossible both teams sorted to kicking long and hoping for the best. Hawthorn added just one goal of their own in the second half and were beaten comfortably.

Melbourne had been poor in the wet during the season, and their form had fallen apart when the rains had come early in the year, but for once they were the side who handled the conditions better than their opponents.

Taylor, Warne-Smith and Usher were best. Conole was 19th man.
