The draw for the sectional rounds meant that Melbourne had to visit Geelong for the second week in a row, and on their second consecutive appearance at the ground they were 30 points worse off in losing again.
At quarter time Melbourne was a point in front, but as soon as the sides changed ends Geelong were in complete control of the match. The only time Melbourne showed any form for the rest of the game was late after the home team had gone into self-preservation mode.
Best were Cumberland, H. Rippon and the Atkinsons.
