Three consecutive losses had seen Geelong topple out of the five, so Melbourne travelled down the highway wary of their wounded opponents. It took three quarters but the Demons eventually shook off a determined Geelong side. Halfway through the third term they clicked and built up a match winning lead, with Jim Stynes and David Williams kicking four of five third quarter goals between them.
On a Kardinia Park mudheap so vicious that the match as briefly held up for umpire Peter Carey to recover his shoe from the mire the centre square had to be shifted 20 metres to allow the umpires somewhere to bounce the ball.
With both backlines in charge during the tough conditions it took until the third term for David Williams to kick two goals which sparked the side. He ended with five for the day.
John Northey said "our blokes fought very hard and I thought our players stood their ground well". He reiterated that the side had to keep winning and beating top teams to win the double chance.
Best for Melbourne were O'Dwyer, Brett Lovett and Wilson.
The Demons would not win again in Geelong until Round 20, 2005
