The Demons kept in touch with the five with a win over the struggling Roys who were finished the moment they conceded nine goals straight in the first term.
By the end of the third term they were just three goals down and could have mounted a challenge but for a dysfunctional forward set-up and the immense contribution of the Ditterich/Keenan rucks with midfielders Paul Callery and Stan Alves.
Best were Wells, Keenan and Callery. Osborne was replaced by Leary during the third quarter. In his last game Trevor Rollinson was an unused reserve.
The win left Melbourne a game outside the five.
