The Dees finally snapped a seven game losing streak which had destroyed their season by holding off North Melbourne in a see-sawing game at the MCG.
Wasteful in attack the Demons were kept just two goals behind at the long break by a strong defensive performance. Paul Rowlands was covering Sam Kekovich and Paul Callery was revelling in the wet conditions.
Using handball perfectly in the conditions the Demons pulled away at half-time and the third quarter saw them still wasting chances but also converting some as well. North came hard in the last quarter but two strong marks and goals by Ray Carr got the Dees over the line.
Best were Callery, Carr and Molloy. Sullivan (shoulder) was replaced by Walker at three-quarter time. Greg Wells was an unused reserve. Bourke injured his knee.
