Fourth placed Fitzroy welcomed bottom of the ladder Melbourne knowing that they were just half a game inside the top four with Footscray circling. In cold, wet conditions with a strong wind the ingredients were there for an upset, and while the visitors didn't make it easy for the Maroons they lacked the skill to win.
Not for the first time that season the Demons played as well as their more fancied opponent in bursts but were unable to sustain it across the game and ended up defeated.
With the Fitzroy key forwards shut out of the game - Keith Robinson comfortably beating spearhead Ernie Hart - or missing shots when they did have them, it was left to their rovers to kick the goals, and down the other end a quality forward line was all that kept the Demons from victory. Two quick goals at the start of the last quarter put Melbourne ahead, and they still led halfway through the quarter before the home side got themselves together and earned the vital win.
Best were Robinson, Spencer and Arnold. 19th and 20th men were O'Keefe and McKaige.
