Melbourne had reopened a slim window of opportunity for the top four with their surprise win over Essendon a week earlier, but a trip to the Corio Oval was too much for them and they were cast back out of the finals race.

With the use of the wind in the first quarter the home side kicked away to a comfortable lead, and were able to only concede a point from their lead in the second.

The even second half saw both sides kick 2.7, and Melbourne had many chances which they failed to take due to a poor forward play. In contrast the Pivotonians converted most of their opportunities into a score and held on to win easily.

Beames, Johnson and Warne-Smith were best.
