After a series of victories which saw them being talked about as premiership favourites, the Redlegs nearly suffered one of the shock defeats of the season against last placed North Melbourne.
The Shinboners had earned just one draw from the first 13 rounds of the season, but after a six goal third quarter blast they were 19 points points in front at the last change having led all day. The draw had been the previous week and they were clearly in their best form of the season, but Melbourne battled back gamely to sneak over the line and avoid humiliation.
Wittman was Melbourne's best, along with Taylor who helped save the game in the last quarter, and Abernethy.
North failed to win a match for the season and ended the year on just two points, 12 adrift of 11th placed Hawthorn.
