In front of their largest crowd since the 2018 Semi Final, Melbourne suffered a third straight loss and dropped off the top of the ladder. It was a bad end to a week where Steven May had been suspended by the club after an altercation in a restaurant with teammate Jake Melksham.
Consistent with all the losses, they had a comfortable lead which evaporated in the second half. The margin as much as 22 points in the second quarter, which Collingwood cut to eight at the long break.
A see-sawing game saw the Demons back in front by two points at the final change, but with first game defender Daniel Turner missing the last quarter concussed, and Harrison Petty also being tested for concussion, the Demons couldn't hold their opposition at bay.
Best were Oliver, Viney and Petracca. Kade Chandler replaced debutante Daniel Turner (concussion) at three quarter time.
