Despite Paul Rowlands holding Peter Hudson for the second time that season the big difference between Melbourne and Hawthorn was that the home side had numerous options while the Demons only had Ross Dillon - who was having a nightmare of a day.
Melbourne's big men were beaten all around the ground and when the ball hit the wet, muddy deck at Glenferrie Oval the Hawks overpowered the Demon runners. Frank Davis and Tony Sullivan tried hard in defence along with Rowlands but after having their team close at half time they couldn't stop the tide and the Hawks ran out easy victors.
Best were Davis, Sullivan and Parke. McKenzie was replaced by Burgmann in the last quarter. Danny Jennings was an unused reserve.
