In the lowest scoring game of the day the top of the table Demons cost themselves victory with wayward kicking. The previous year's beaten grand finalists were playing to keep their finals chances alive, and they should have won in a tense finish.

Collingwood didn't have it their own way all day - Melbourne had a handy lead at quarter time and retained it until the last quarter. In an attempt to sure up their forward line they switched Fenton-Smith with Bob Johnson, but the strengthening of attack cost the ruck at a vital part of the game and the forwards only managed 1.5 for the quarter.

Melbourne's forward line had been a sore-point all day, with Geoff Tunbridge - fresh from being named in the state side after 11 VFL games - the only player forward of centre who provided any regular attacking play.

The Pies took a 10 point lead, only for Ian Ridley to snap a goal from a pack in the dying seconds to earn a draw. The final siren sparked a melee involving fans, players and police. Don Williams and Ron Barassi were knocked to the ground and trainer Les Green was also attacked.

Best were Adams, Gleeson and Beckwith. Fenton-Smith was replaced by Brenchley in the last quarter due to cramp.
