Needing a win after three straight losses to keep their finals hopes alive, Melbourne were giving a tremendous scare by second last Hawthorn on the narrow Glenferrie Oval.

The sides were level at quarter time, with each having their period of domination. Melbourne improved significantly in the second term, with their quick ball movement forcing Hawthorn's defenders into errors. The visitors opened a 14 point lead.

Early in the third quarter Melbourne's defence comfortably looked after Hawthorn's rare attacks. The Mayblooms defence were also strong, keeping the Demons to a three quarter time lead. In the last quarter they put in a full force comeback. Melbourne were flustered and started to make errors, allowing the home side to hit the front early in the term. It took Melbourne ten minutes of scrambling to force through two behinds and get back in front by the point they held on to win by.

Best were Murnane, Lock and Mueller. 19th man Truscott replaced Jones (injured leg) in the second quarter. Emselle was originally named 19th man, then was a late replacement Buckley in the starting lineup.

The match was one of four (out of six) games that day to end in a one point margin. It left Melbourne sixth, being Geelong, Richmond and Collingwood on percentage.
