A week after keeping their thin finals hopes alive with a win over Essendon, Melbourne registered another important win by beating another finals contender. Geelong had lost form, but were sluggish and beaten surprisingly easily. Melbourne was already three goals to one in front late in the first quarter, before two more opened a match-winning lead. Geelong had the wind in the second quarter, but were outscored three goals to one and unable to get past a dominant Jack Mueller at centre half-back.

Geelong altered their side at half time, but conceded the only goal of the third quarter to be left on 2.9 at the last change. With the result confirmed much of the already small crowd left the ground in the last quarter, missing the visitors trebling their goal tally. They never got close enough to challenge and Melbourne regained control of the game by the final bell to run out comfortable victors. Melbourne remained an outside chance to play finals due to their tough run home, but the win all but ruined Geelong's hopes of playing in September.

Best were Mueller, La Fontaine and Deague.
