After failing to land a goal against South a week earlier the Reds went into the match against Geelong as underdogs, and at half time it looked an accurate call as they were 14 points down and had managed just one major. The visitors had first use of a moderate breeze, and set off with seven scoring shots to one by the first change. Their hot start dismissed a traditional excuse for slow starts at the MCG, that the train journey from Geelong left them with stiff limbs.
Against the wind in the second term Geelong battled hard to keep Melbourne at bay and kick the only goal of the term themselves. After half time the 'Pivot' fell off the face of the map on a greasy, heavy ground, and allowed Melbourne back into the game. They took a five point lead into the final term but conceded 3.6 to 1.2 to suffer a shock defeat. The teams traded the lead late in the last quarter, and Geelong had the chance to extend the margin to over six points but missed a shot. The Reds then took advantage of a defensive blooper, where one Cats' defender kicked into the back of another, allowing Joolen to goal. Tomkins added another and the margin was over 10 points.
Tomkins and McKenzie were best, with Allan playing his best game in the ruck. Politz, Bristow, Naismith, Fitzpatrick, Purse, Brereton and Monk were also noted amongst the best.
The win kept Melbourne in touch with the top four, drawing to within a game of Geelong.
