Melbourne took a one point lead into quarter time after a goalless term for both sides, but there had been no doubt that South were the better side and with a slight wind advantage they opened up a nine point lead.
Melbourne reduced the gap to six points at the last change, and for the first 15 minutes of the fourth quarter there was no score before Leith's goal equalled the scores. Young put Melbourne ahead by a point. The two sides traded the lead again before South goalled from a free kick in the last minute to win.
Best were McGinis, Mitchell and Rippon.
