After losing the last three Queen's Birthday clashes by an average of ten goals it looked like another dirty day for the Demons when they trailed by five goals deep into the third quarter. It looked like a difficult lead-up, with trips to Brisbane and a wet Perth was catching up to them. They'd started well, leading by eight at quarter time, before Collingwood took over in the second term. Nathan Brown had inspired the team by reappearing in the second half after taking a heavy bump before half-time from Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley. The head-high impact left Brown with tooth fragments in his cheek; the incident leading to a heated half-time address from Neale Daniher, who had Brown lead the team onto the field for the second half. In the short-term, the move had no effect as Collingwood kicked the first two goals of the third quarter and still led by nearly five goals at the 23 minute mark.
Seven of the last eight goals of the game delivered victory. David Neitz moved himself to centre-half forward and helped spark the revival with a big bump on Scott Burns, who had already been tagged out of the game by Phil Read. Midway through the third quarter Adem Yze was released from a back pocket role to play forward and kick two crucial goals. Melbourne had 20 tackles to three in the final quarter, and a courageous effort by Nathan Brown helped set up Yze's third to grab the lead. Collingwood got in front again, but two goals from David Neitz carried Melbourne to victory.
