Forced to travel to Perth a week after a game in Brisbane, Melbourne's day got worse when the heavens opened and turned their clash against the Dockers into a wet slog.
Jeff White had been dominant in the ruck, but a quality third quarter by Freo gave them a 12 point lead at the last break.
A blistering last quarter in terrible conditions burst open a game that had been tight all day. Jeff White dominated the hitouts, Peter Vardy was deadly up forward with three goals in four minutes and Brock McLean played a confident last quarter on debut.
