As they had done so often in the past two seasons the Demons threatened for a quarter before falling apart. So badly apart that the result marked the 11th most points conceded in a match in their history.
Until ten minutes into the second quarter Barassi's side were playing a running, handballing game and tackling their opponents furiously. With veterans like Crosswell and Keenan leading the way the young Demons were doing everything right until it inexplicably stopped and the Hawks blew them off the park. Several opportunities missed at the start of the first term came back to haunt them as the Hawks kicked two goals late to close the margin, but when Robert Flower kicked the first goal of the second quarter and his side spent the next ten minutes in attack it looked like it was going to be a grand day.
From there on though it was a massacre. The Hawks clamped down with pressure and only Crosswell up front had any impact as the game went on. Barassi refused to resort to fire and brimstone after the match, simply explaining that he was in charge of a young side and "young sides have their ups and downs". Mark Jackson was dragged at three quarter time, and Robert Flower tagged out of the contest.
Best were Keenan, Crosswell and Battiston
