Melbourne's third straight win lifted them to seventh and just half a game outside the top five.
Ian Ridley had been forced to blast his side at half-time when they were two goals down, but in their first clash with the Ron Barassi-era Roos his old side stormed home to win in the last quarter, with three-quarter time substitute John Clennett dominating the ruck in the last quarter.
Best were Bourke, Tilbrook and Brewer. Williamson was replaced by Clennett at three-quarter time. Frank Davis was an unused reserve. Biffin suffered a strained hamstring.
