Having slaughtered the hapless Roos a week earlier, Melbourne travelled to the Junction Oval on Queen's Birthday Monday hoping to make it two in a row.
Their attempts to sure up a spot amongst the top five contenders were thwarted by the combined efforts of Lions John Murphy and Laurie Richards. Richards had been wasteful all day until kicking the winning goal, and Murphy was sublime with 38 kicks and nine marks. Fifteen of his kicks coming in the first quarter.
Paul Callery had a shot to win with the last kick of the match but was knocked off balance and only managed a point. Ross Brewer had been one his side's best all day at centre half-forward before being taken out of the game during the third quarter after suffering a knee to the groin.
Best were Hardeman, Callery and Gallus. Rollinson (strained media ligament) was replaced by Ritterman at half time, and Anderson by Molloy during the last quarter. Sinclair suffered a broken hand.
