Two of many contenders for the top four battled, on a windy day, and the Demons won courtesy of a six goal to two last quarter. North started favourites, so Melbourne's win was the biggest shock of the day. When they were 25 points in front during the first quarter it looked like they would win easily, but a late goal brought the margin back to a more manageable 20.

Two quick goals in the second quarter cut the gap before debutante Bob Johnson kicked two in a row to give the Demons a lead. North hit back with a late goal, but after an even first half Melbourne's ability in winning the third quarter into the wind by nine points was decisive, allowing them to race away in the final term. They were gifted a goal when a North defender kicked in after a behind and hit Noel Clarke 10 yards out from goal.

Marquis, Beckwith and Clarke were best. Johnson took 13 marks on debut. Carroll and Bull replaced McMahen (injured) and McLean respectively during the last quarter.

During the following week North Melbourne's committee met to discuss complaints about field umpire Rowe's handling of the game.
