The Melbourne selectors were ruthless in their changes after the disappointing loss the previous Saturday, dropping Frood, Cassidy, Crapper, Vanthoff, Collins and H. Davidson. They were replaced by McDonald, Abernethy, Deane, Long, Margitich and Esposito.

Hawthorn hadn't beaten Melbourne since entering the league and their bad run continued as George Margitich found form again. He had gone goalless in the shock loss to Richmond a week after booting 11 against Essendon but got his touch back and carried his side over the line after an even first half.

The conditions didn't help either team, and considering the soaking conditions the two teams put on a surprisingly high standard performance. The first half wasn't without controversy as Hawthorn's Daffey was denied a goal after a clear mark. He took the ball and with nobody standing the mark he kicked the goal. The umpire brought the ball back and made him kick it again and he missed.

The Reds booted away in the third quarter and then restricted the Mayblooms to a single point in the final term while they ran over the top of them.

Esposito, Pemberton and Johnson were best. Crapper was 19th man.

After playing each team once, Melbourne remained a game and a slight percentage in front of fourth place Essendon.
