A five game winning streak came to an end in one of the best games of the season. Fred McGinis played despite a hip injury suffered during a Victorian representative match in Adelaide.

Strong wind to one end of the ground gave a decided advantage to whoever kicked to the railway end, which was Fitzroy in the first quarter and they got off to a fast start. They had the first two goals before Melbourne opened their account. The Reds didn't have many chances in the first quarter but they defended well into the wind.

A two goal lead to the home side going into the last quarter looked vulnerable given the conditions, and while the wind had slightly dropped off it was still strong enough that Melbourne might have run over the top to win. The Roys quickly killed the game off with two early goals and the visitors could only manage one goal for the quarter.

Best were Cumberland, Moodie and Wardill.

Notes
Official sources show Byers in the team but it's now accepted that Sowden played instead of him.
