During the second quarter, with the game still in the balance, both sides had four shots for goal. The result was 24 points for the Bombers and four the Demons, allowing the visitors to kick away after going into the quarter time break a point down.
Five goals to three in the third quarter allowed Melbourne back into the game and by three-quarter time they were just three points down and had seven more scoring shots on the board. Unfortunately their inaccuracy, coupled with the Bombers 11 goals from 15 shots left them vulnerable in the last quarter and when Stan Alves hit the post early in the last term they had shot themselves in the foot for the last time. It would be their only score for the quarter.
Best were Groom, Mann and Dixon. Vagg was replaced by Stone in the last quarter. Parke (knee) was replaced by Lees in the last quarter. Roet bruised his thigh.
