After four straight wins which kept them in touch with the top two the Demons almost kicked themselves out of a win against top four contenders St Kilda.
Their accuracy was terrible all day. Two goals from 12 scoring shots in the first quarter, and no goals in the last left them vulnerable to a comeback by the home side. The game appeared to be won until the 18 minute mark of the last term when St Kilda kicked three quick goals to throw the Demons into confusion.
Melbourne just held on to win. St Kilda were denied a mark in front of goal late in the game and the Demons got out with a one point victory. The result became even more important when it was revealed that as well as the Saints the other top four teams had both lost on the same afternoon. The Demons jumped from third to top of the ladder courtesy of their superior percentage, but neither team had shown any great form during the match.
Laidlaw, Rowarth and Tassie Johnson were best. Ridley (broken nose) was replaced by Crompton during the last quarter.
