Two consecutive seven point defeats had put Melbourne out of the four, and for the second time that year they were in danger of losing touch with the challenging pack. Hawthorn were third last, but they'd only won two games less than Melbourne so they weren't to be dismissed lightly.

Melbourne's defence had been one of its saving graces all year, and once again they did a number on their opponents which allowed the rest of the team to rack up the required score to win. The highlight was keeping Hawthorn to two goals in the second quarter while racking up five.

The Mayblooms impressed for the only time all day in the third term when they booted six goals, but they were unable to plug the gaps and conceded seven to the Demons in the last.

Bickford, Cordner and Rodda were best. Lourey and Hardie were 19th and 20th man.
