At 1-8 Melbourne were not expected to provide any sort of challenge to Essendon, and the form book was followed closely. With vital players like Strong, Sowden, Couttie and Mills out Melbourne were never any chance, and they were two goals down within five minutes of the start of the game.
By half time the score was 56 to 3, and Melbourne did well to only concede another 13 points to the lead in the second half. The third quarter was their best of the day and they rallied to win the quarter.
Best were Sleeman, Bowe and Langley.
