In a high quality game Melbourne had the use of the breeze in the first quarter but only managed four behinds. Twice they had the ball at the goal line but were denied, while at the other end Geelong counter attacked and scored the opening goal from their only opportunity. Cumberland got Melbourne's first goal of the game in the second quarter, and the Demons narrowly outscored their opponents but were wasteful with their kicking for goal.

Geelong kicked the first goal of the third quarter while Melbourne continued to miss chances, finishing the quarter on 1.13. Though they had kicked two goals less Melbourne were only six points behind on the strength of their many scoring shots, and they kicked three quick goals early in the quarter to grab the lead.

Melbourne had dominated the first 15 minutes of the quarter, but after they took the lead it was the visitors who took over. Like their opponents earlier in the game Geelong could only manage behinds and lost by 11 points.

Best were McGinis, Moodie and Cumberland.

Notes
Official records show Sowden playing, however it has since been accepted that Byers replaced him.
