The opening day of the season started with a heavy shower and left the ground heavy, but soon glorious sunshine was showing for the six league and two MFC debutants to take on Collingwood at the cricket ground.
Melbourne had won the clash between the two sides in the first round of 1912, and the visitors ran out easy winners with just one new player in their team. After an even first quarter Collingwood dominated from the first bell of the second quarter. Melbourne narrowly won the third quarter but found it hard to break through Collingwood's defence.
A late rally in the fourth quarter which got the margin back to around two goals was ended when the Magpies kicked a steadier.
McKenzie, Lugton and Lilley were Melbourne's best.
A curtain raiser baseball game was held between the MCC and Collingwood 'A'.
