The Demons entered the match missing the suspended Ron Barassi and injured Brian Dixon (a late withdrawal). After John Lord injured his shoulder 13 minutes into the first quarter Hawthorn dominated the ruck. Lord initially stayed on the ground but was ineffective, and both the 19th and 20th men were shorter player. Hawthorn had themselves in a seemingly unbeatable position in the third quarter, before Melbourne launched a comeback that cut the gap to nine at the last change. Barry Bourke kicked three goals, and his two behinds early in the last quarter cut the gap to seven. With minutes to go that was still the margin. Hawthorn sealed the game with a goal, and though Bryan Kenneally brought the margin back under ten points it was too late for Melbourne.
Anderson, Crompton and Kenneally were best. Lord was replaced by Dawson in the second quarter and Emselle by Matthews in the last quarter. Brian Dixon was a late withdrawal with a knee injury, Alan Rowarth was elevated to the starting team and replaced on the bench by Ray Dawson. Hassa Mann played with the flu and collapsed after the game. Brian Leahy injured ankle and knee ligaments.
