The Demons entered the match missing the suspended Ron Barassi and injured Brian Dixon (a late withdrawal). John Lord also injured his shoulder early, and from then on Hawthorn dominated the ruck.
The Hawks had put themselves in a seemingly unbeatable position before a withering comeback in the third quarter drew Melbourne to within nine points at the last change. With minutes to go the margin was still seven points until Olsson goalled to seal the match. Bryan Kenneally kicked a highlight reel goal to bring the margin back under ten points but it was too late for the Demons.
Anderson, Crompton and Kenneally were best.
