South Melbourne win by 4 goals
Goalkicker: Smith 2
The home side was heavily favoured to win, and while Melbourne defended strongly they were outmatched. South were so superior that they spent most of the day trying to kick goals from various angles rather than pass to a teammate in a better position, it was rumoured that this was because bonuses were being paid to the side's best goalkickers. It took until late in the first quarter for South to kick their first goal via what was described in one newspaper as "one of the greatest flukes ever witnessed on a football field". The second quarter was all South, and they kicked three goals to nil.
Best were Wilson, debutante Christy and Fry. Sheehan played with a shoulder injury that left him almost useless.
