Berts impressed recruiters with his athleticism at draft camp, breaking shuttle run records and performing strongly in agility and vertical jump tests. He had played for Northern Territory in the national Under 18 carnival, and played in a Grand Final for Palmerston, but Melbourne drafted him on his athletic potential, as a long-term project player.

He spent all of his time at Melbourne playing in the Sandringham Reserves, playing 20 games for 11 goals as a wing and half-forward. After leaving Melbourne he returned to Palmerston, and later moved to the NT Thunder in the QAFL. In 2009 he was back at Palmerston as captain and remained with them throughout 2011. He also appeared for Mackay City in the AFL Mackay competition during that year.
